It was shot on some 1942 blackmarket filmstock and was badly fogged and “such a horror” that Melville wanted to forget it. Pierre Braunberger liked it, however, and distributed it with some success. Melville’s first feature, Le Silence de la mer There is no celebration of vibrant fashion, psychedelic patterns, or bright signposts of individuality—some of which we might expect in a late ’60s film. Melville’s film isn’t a feisty portrait of an era; it’s more like an x-ray photograph highlighting the impersonal mechanisms of the modern world. Minimal and breathtaking, Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Samourai features an icy and smoldering lead performance from one of the most beautiful human beings to ever grace the big screen: Alain Delon.

Le Samouraï by Jean-Pierre Melville. There is no solitude greater than the samurai’s, unless perhaps it be that of a tiger in the jungle. Melville, in an interview excerpt by Rui Nogueira for a book published in 1971 ("Melville on Melville"), said that he began writing the story of Le Samourai (1967) with the simple notion that "the only alibi you can really count on in life is one backed up by the woman who loves you." Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Samouraï depicts one of the most interesting characters from the French New Wave: Alain Delon's Jef Costello. A cold and almost completely silent contract killer, Jef is explicitly meant to symbolize the Japanese idea of the samurai from which the film gets its title. Melville is God to me.

An elegantly stylized masterpiece of cool by maverick director Jean‑Pierre Melville Jean-Pierre Melville (1917-1973) directed thirteen feature films between 1947 and 1972, most of them ranking among the best in postwar French cinema. In particular, his brilliant gangster films Bob le flambeur (1956), Le Doulos (1963), Le Deuxième souffle (1966), Le Cercle rouge (1969), and especially Le Samourai (1967), with their cool, minimalist noir style are defining instances of the Melville loved 1930s Hollywood crime movies and in his own work helped develop modern film noir.

Melville’s anachronistic lone warrior/assassin/samurai type wandering through 1967 Paris with its modern metro, fast cars and chic night clubs calls to mind the figure of the drifting samurai/gangster/assassin in cult auteur Seijun Suzuki’s 1960s samurai and yakuza films, especially Kanto Wanderer (1963) and Tokyo Drifter. Melville shows us his lone killer’s methodical precision with great flair, and the police manhunt through the Métro is as good an action sequence as any.

Melville pares down and leaves out. He disdains artificial action sequences and manufactured payoffs. Le Samouraï is een Franse misdaadfilm uit 1967 onder regie van Jean-Pierre Melville.
