Although the victims of these Trials were eventually set free from prison, Paton was not allowed to travel outside of South Africa for many years. Throughout his life, Alan Paton spoke out against the injustices suffered by the Black majority of South Africa. He died at his home near Durban in 1988. Coetzee, recent winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, plays the same plot-reversals, more subtly and variously, in such novels as Life and Times of Michael K and Disgrace.

Originally established in 1989, the Alan Paton Award was conferred annually since 1989 for meritorious works of non-fiction. It aimed to reward books presenting "the illumination of truthfulness, especially those forms of it that are new, delicate, unfashionable and fly in the face of power", and demonstrating "compassion, elegance of writing, and intellectual and moral integrity".
